HVAC Service in Upper Macungie Township, PA

Lehigh County · Service area

Two townships in one, and they need different work

Along Route 100 and out toward Fogelsville, Upper Macungie is warehouses and new subdivisions on the gas main. Push west toward Breinigsville and the mains run out, and about 1,450 households are still heating by delivery — oil or propane.

Unity works out of Macungie Borough, immediately south. Tyler Furbacher owns the company, walks the job and installs what he quotes.

What the work here actually looks like

Upper Macungie is the youngest housing stock in the service area, which sounds like it means nothing needs doing. It means the opposite: an enormous cohort of equipment installed in the 2000s build-out is now twenty to twenty-five years old, all arriving at end of life at once.

  • 2000s subdivisions at end of first equipment life. Nearly a quarter of the township went up between 2000 and 2009. The furnaces and condensers that came with those houses are due, and replacement is a planning decision rather than an emergency if it is made before the failure.
  • Oil and propane out west. Breinigsville, Fogelsville and the farms between them. Heat pump conversion ends the deliveries; a propane or gas system keeps them. The right answer depends on your gallons, not on a preference.
  • Trexlertown and the newer developments. Ducted systems, mostly gas, where the work is replacement, duct correction and maintenance.
  • The pre-1940 five percent. Farmhouses. Radiators, no ducts, thick walls. Ductless territory.

The gas line stops before the township does

Fifty-six percent of Upper Macungie heats with UGI gas, which is the highest gas share of anywhere Unity works. That number hides the gradient. The eastern end, near Allentown and the Route 222 bypass, is well served. West of Breinigsville the mains thin out, and eleven percent of the township is on fuel oil with another 3.6 percent on propane.

For those 1,450 households the replacement question is really a fuel question, and it gets answered with arithmetic. UGI will extend a service line at no cost within 150 feet of an existing main; past that the run is on you, and at that point a cold-climate heat pump often wins outright because it needs no main at all. Equipment is sized to a winter design temperature near 8 °F from a load calculation on the house.

If you are one of the 1,450 households out here still taking deliveries, this gives you the number before anyone quotes you anything. Run the numbers on the oil savings estimator.

Permits here are straightforward, and inspections are done in-house

Upper Macungie runs its own permit department at 7540 Windsor Drive, Suite 311, Allentown, and its own inspectors — there is no third-party agency in the middle. HVAC replacement and alteration is an explicitly listed permit type. Inspections are booked by phone on 610-395-4892 with 48 hours notice, using the permit number on the card, and both rough and final mechanical inspections apply on a full replacement.

That is genuinely easier than several neighbouring municipalities, and it is one reason a planned replacement here goes more smoothly than an emergency one.

Common questions about HVAC work in Upper Macungie

My house is from 2004 and everything still runs. Should I be thinking about this?

Probably, yes. Equipment from the 2000s build-out is at twenty to twenty-five years. It is not that it will fail tomorrow; it is that replacing on your schedule costs less and gives you a real choice of equipment, and replacing in February does neither.

There is no gas main on my road. What are my options?

Propane, which keeps the delivery model, or a heat pump, which ends it. UGI covers a service line extension within 150 feet of an existing main and no further, so past that distance the economics usually favour the heat pump. Start from your actual gallons.

Will a heat pump keep up out here in January?

If it is chosen for the conditions, yes. That means capacity rated at low outdoor temperatures rather than at 47 °F, a deliberate decision about backup heat, and a load calculation on the actual building. Sizing off square footage is how people end up cold and blaming the technology.

Do you cover Trexlertown, Breinigsville and Fogelsville?

Yes, all three, and they are all inside Upper Macungie Township. Trexlertown and Breinigsville have pages of their own because the housing differs so much between them. Wescosville is not in the township — it sits in Lower Macungie, which is also covered and has its own page. New Tripoli, in Lynn Township to the north-west, is inside the driving radius too; permits there go through Lynn Township rather than Upper Macungie.
